WHAT IS CANCER ?

Cancer is a disease of which many people have an unjustified fear. This fear is borne partly from tales that are told of patients in advanced stages and partly from the fact that the actual cause of cancer still eludes us. When cancer is discovered early, the results of treatment are very much improved, and every patient who has advanced cancer has had the disease in an early stage at one time. Early diagnosis is perhaps the most important single factor that can improve the results of treatment and it is one of the objects of this blog to discuss the ways in which this can be achieved. A great deal is known about cancer and the fact that ultimate cause of the disease is not known is nothing more than academically frustrating, for such knowledge is certainly no prerequisite for vigorous treatment.
We can all coprehend what is meant by an 'infection'. It can be looked upon as a battele between the body and invading bacteria or viruses. One can cisualize easily the picture of an army of invading bacteria being tackled by the defences of the body. The analogy may be carried further with antibiotics representing ammunition for the defending forces. Cancer is , howerver, a different state of affairs and is in no way comparable to an infection. There is, as fas as we know, nothing invading from outside. There is, as far as we know, nothing invading from outside.
There is no clear-cut battle between the cancer and the body. The antibiotics used to combat infection do not affect the relationship between cancer and the body so what is cancer?
