BREAST CANCER

BREAST CANCER
This is the commonest form of the disease in women. It most often appears about the time of the change of life (menopause) or later, but can occur at any age after puberty.

The first symptom (and sign) is a swelling in the breast. There are many causes of swellings in the breast. and cancer is responsible for only a small percentage of them,Having said this it is only reasonable to repeat that cancer does start as a swelling or lump in the breast, and only a doctor can differentiate between a beings and a malignant tumour . The disease presents as a swelling in a structure that is superficial and easily felt as the tissues are soft. The results of treatment when the disease is left until it reaches an advanced stage are not good. A woman discovering a swelling in her breast should report to a doctor without delay. He can institute treatment if  it is required and, if it should turn out to be a cancer, the result of treatment at this stage are good. There is no advantage at all in delaying seeking medical advice. One occasionally sees patients who have waited a long time before seeking a doctor's opinion about a swelling in  the breast. The reason they give is that they feared that is would be diagnosed as cancer. This is irrational because cancer of the breast discovered at an early stage is not a disease to be feared.
Occasionally it arises from one of the minute tubes (milk ducts) that pass from the centre of the breast to the nipple. Under these circumstances it may cause bleeding into the duct and a blood-stained discharge appears from the nipple. Though this symptoms is commonly caused bu a non- malignant condition it can, as described, result from an early cancer in a very treatable stage. A visit to the doctor is therefore advised.
As the swelling in the brest increases in size, it may involve the skin which becomes puckered. It may become fixed to the muscles on the deep surface of the breast.
